Tamil Nadu: DMK Law Secretary and Rajya Sabha member N.R. Elango has stated that the Election Commission of India’s decision to extend the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls by one week is a victory for the DMK.
Regarding this, he told reporters in Delhi on Sunday: The Election Commission is stating that more than 95 percent of the forms submitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of voter rolls have been received. It also stated that approximately 75 to 80 percent of the returned forms have been computerized.
Meanwhile, in Chennai, only 55 percent have been computerized. However, the Election Commission has not provided any figures on the percentage of forms returned. There are fears that this will invalidate the votes of many voters.
Furthermore, we felt that there was a significant delay in computerizing the received forms. That is why we have repeatedly stressed that the Election Commission’s timetable is incorrect. We also pointed out that the monsoon is likely to impact these works.
Therefore, the current storm is also likely to impact that work. In this context, the Election Commission has acknowledged the DMK’s point and extended the counting period by a week. We see this as a victory for the DMK and its democratic struggle.
It is our firm resolve that no citizen of Tamil Nadu’s vote should go unchallenged. We believe that postponing this for a week is the first step in that journey and will help in collecting all submitted forms and computerizing them. However, many issues remain unresolved in this SIR process, he said.
