EU bans export of poultry products to Brazil due to bird flu

Business Business: The European Union (EU) has banned the import of poultry and meat products from Brazil. The move comes after the first case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was confirmed at a poultry farm in Brazil. Under EU rules, any exporting country must be bird flu-free.
Brazil, the world’s largest poultry exporter and the EU’s main supplier, can no longer issue health certificates for the EU, halting exports from the entire country. Earlier, countries such as China and Japan had also banned imports from Brazil.
Although the EU is a small market for Brazil, Brazil’s share in the EU’s total poultry imports has been 32%. Experts believe that the halt of cheap poultry imports from Brazil could provide relief to the local industry.
