Chennai. Politics regarding electricity bills and power supply has intensified in Tamil Nadu. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has made a scathing attack on the government regarding the power system in the state and the increased electricity bills. He claimed that since the formation of the government, power cuts and electricity related problems have been continuing due to which the general public is facing huge problems.
M.K. Stalin, in a post on his official He alleged that the common people are bearing the brunt of the government’s policies and lakhs of families are troubled by extra electricity bills.
“The government has no option but to accept that 3.70 lakh families have filed complaints regarding excess electricity bills,” Stalin said in his statement. He said that this figure in itself is proof that there is widespread dissatisfaction among the public regarding electricity bills.
The DMK leader also said that people are constantly sharing copies of their electricity bills on social media and expressing their anger against the government. According to him, reactions emerging on social media make it clear that the actual number of affected people may be much higher than the government figures.
He said that if lakhs of people have formally lodged complaints, then there will be many consumers who have not lodged complaints due to some reason, but they are also facing the problem of extra electricity bills. Stalin demanded the government to seriously investigate the entire matter and provide immediate relief to consumers who have been burdened with wrong or excessive electricity bills.
Stalin accused the government of affecting the daily life of common citizens due to disruption in power supply and increased bills. He said that along with domestic consumers, it is also adversely affecting small traders, laborers and middle class families. Continuous electricity related complaints raise questions on the functioning of the government.
He said that the government should not be limited to just accepting the number of complaints, but should also tell what steps have been taken so far to resolve these complaints. Stalin alleged that instead of solving people’s problems, the government was ignoring them.
The DMK leader said that public anger is continuously increasing and thousands of messages appearing on social media are an indication that people are seriously troubled over the issue of electricity bills. He said that if the government does not take effective steps in time, people’s dissatisfaction may increase further.
He demanded from the government that a transparent system should be made for reviewing excess electricity bills, complaints should be resolved quickly and a concrete policy should be prepared so that such situation does not arise again in future. Stalin said that providing relief to the public is the primary responsibility of the government and any kind of negligence in providing basic services like electricity cannot be accepted.
At present, there has been no detailed official response from the government on these allegations of Stalin.
