Chandigarh (IANS) | Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said that on the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the state government would soon initiate action against those named in the report related to drug trade and those who ruin the youth through drugs would not be spared. In a statement issued here, the Chief Minister said that the drug trade, which flourished during the previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes, had ruined the coming generations of the state.
He said that the rich leaders of both these parties had patronized this illegal trade to make illegal money in connivance with bureaucrats and drug peddlers.
Mann said that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared at any cost and will be put behind bars.
The Chief Minister said that the inquiry report in this matter was hanging in the balance for a long time, as none of the previous governments was serious about taking action against the forces that ruined the future of Punjab.
Mann said that once he has received the report from the High Court, strict action will be taken against the forces hostile to the state and its youth. He assured the Punjabis that exemplary action would be taken against those whose hands were stained with the blood of innumerable youths who fell prey to drugs.
Significantly, this report was pending for five years and no action was taken by the previous Congress government, but the Chief Minister had given consent in the High Court on February 15 after assuming office.
Mann had given his consent to bring in the public domain all the sealed reports presented before the Punjab and Haryana High Court which establish a nexus between police officers and drug traffickers.
The report was submitted by a Special Investigation Team, which probed the matter in depth. This action paved the way for stern action against the strong nexus of officials-politicians and drug peddlers involved in this trade for a long time.
