Holi festival is coming soon. This year Holika Dahan is on 24th March and Holi with colors will be played on 25th March. Holika Dahan is done a day before Holi. The story of Holika Dahan is related to Lord Vishnu’s devotee Prahlad and the demon Holika. It is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil. A few days before Holika Dahan, wood is collected at one place, after which Holika Dahan is done after worshiping as per rituals a day before Holi. However, wood for Holika Dahan should be selected very carefully, because there are some trees which are not used in Holika Dahan. It is not auspicious to use the wood of these trees in Holika. Do not use these trees in Holika Dahan
Wood of Peepal, Shami, Mango, Amla, Neem, Kelly, Ashoka and Bael trees should not be used in Holika Dahan. These trees are considered revered in Hindu religion, hence these trees should not be used in Holika Dahan. Also, green trees should not be used in Holika Dahan.
Wood from these trees can be used
It is appropriate to use branches of a dried tree in Holika Dahan. Apart from this, wood of castor and sycamore tree can be used. The sycamore tree is also considered auspicious in Sanatan Dharma, but in this season the leaves of the sycamore tree start falling. In such a situation, if the branches of these trees are not burnt then insects start infesting them.

Make sure to use cow dung cakes in Holika Dahan, because cow dung is especially used in worship. Besides, using Kandas in Holika also keeps the environment pure.
Weeds can also be used
Apart from wood and cow dung cakes, you can also burn weeds in Holika Dahan. It has many benefits. Firstly, unnecessary green trees will not have to be cut and secondly, by burning the weeds during Holika, the surroundings will also be cleaned.
