Erode: Differences have once again emerged among farmers regarding the modernization of the canal of Lower Bhavani Project. Work on the project, which has been suspended due to various reasons including rain, will resume in May next year.

While Bhavani Ayakattu, members of the lower level owners’ association, presented a petition to the district collector, asking that the government continue the modernization project as planned. The Movement for the Conservation of Lower Bhavani River announced that it would hold a demonstration against the project on 14 December.

At a meeting, members of the Rivers Conservation Movement of Bajo Bhawani decided to organize a demonstration demanding the government to abandon the modernization project. KV Ponnaiyan, secretary of the Association of Proprietors of Lower Tier Bhavani Ayakattu, who presented petitions at the offices of the district collector and the district superintendent of police, said: “Complete modernization of the canal LBP is the need of the moment.

Earlier, when there were differences, he continued talks with Minister S Muthusamy and decided to take up modernization work only where necessary. Now water is flowing in the canal and the work is at a standstill. Will be updated soon. Some people are now spreading propaganda to deactivate it. The district administration should take measures to stop false campaigns and complete the project properly. WRD officials said: “The modernization work of LBP canal will start only next May. “Can’t say anything about this right now.” The Rs 709 crore project started in May.
