Democracy runs on people’s voice, not on buildings: Kharge

New Delhi (IANS) | Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping President Draupadi Murmu away from the inauguration of the new Parliament building and Delhi Police manhandling protesting wrestlers. The Congress President said that democracy does not run on buildings but on people. The Congress President tweeted from his Twitter account that the right to inaugurate the new Parliament was taken away from the President. Women players were beaten up on the streets. Three lies of the BJP-RSS rulers have now been exposed in front of the country – democracy, nationalism and save the girl child. Remember Modi ji, democracy does not run through buildings, it runs through the voice of the public.

The Congress President’s remarks came after PM Modi inaugurated the new Parliament House building on Sunday morning. When protesting wrestlers tried to march from Jantar Mantar to the new Parliament House, they were manhandled by the Delhi Police.

Delhi Police on Sunday detained Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat from Jantar Mantar when they tried to march towards the new Parliament building by crossing the police barricades. The police also removed their tents from the protest site.

The wrestlers had announced to hold a panchayat near the new Parliament House. Since April 23, prominent Indian wrestlers like Punia, Malik and Vinesh have been protesting at Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.
