Bhubaneswar: Due to concerns over the availability of LPG cylinders and rising cooking gas prices, many households in some northern Odisha districts, such as Balasore, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj, have reportedly switched to electric stoves. This has led to a sudden surge in demand for induction cooktops at electronics stores. Several electronics outlets in cities and towns reported an increase in footfall over the past two days, as customers lined up to purchase induction stoves as an alternative cooking option. Traders said that the demand for electric cooking appliances has increased rapidly, and amid uncertainty over LPG supplies, many families are opting for induction cooktops.
Shop owners said this trend has accelerated since news of the erratic availability of LPG began spreading. They further added that customers are increasingly turning to electric appliances to meet their daily cooking needs. An electronics trader in Balasore Market said, “Demand has increased significantly in the past few days. Many customers are specifically coming to buy induction stoves because they are worried about the availability of LPG cylinders.” According to traders, the sudden increase in sales is putting pressure on existing stock levels. Some shopkeepers said they are having difficulty maintaining sufficient inventory due to reduced supply from distributors. Another shop owner said, “Many popular models of induction cooktops are already running low. If demand continues at this pace, we may face a shortage of stock in the coming days.” Customers visiting the shops said they were looking for reliable alternatives to LPG due to confusion over cylinder availability and prices. A resident who purchased an induction cooktop on Thursday said, “We cannot depend completely on LPG right now. Buying an induction stove is a safe option so that there are no problems cooking at home.” Traders believe that if concerns about LPG supplies persist, demand for electric cooking appliances could remain strong. They also said this shift reflects a growing preference among households for backup cooking options during times of supply disruptions.
