Farrukhabad. A serious case of dowry harassment has emerged from the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh. A female judge, posted at a Gram Nyayalaya (village court), has filed an FIR against her husband—a Merchant Navy engineer—and his family members, accusing them of dowry harassment, physical assault, and issuing threats. The judge alleges that her in-laws began demanding dowry as soon as the marriage was arranged. Although some demands were met during the wedding, the in-laws’ expectations continued to escalate. It is alleged that they are now demanding Rs 30 lakh. The complaint further states that upon the failure to meet these demands, she was subjected to physical and mental abuse, and threatened with divorce so that her husband could remarry.
Given the gravity of the situation, the police have registered a case based on the complaint and initiated an investigation. This legal action, taken by a judicial officer against her own husband and in-laws, has once again brought the issues of dowry harassment and women’s safety into the spotlight.
Demands for dowry began as soon as the marriage was arranged
In her complaint, the judge alleges that immediately after the marriage was settled, her husband and his family members began pressuring her regarding dowry. While some demands were fulfilled at the time of the wedding, the in-laws remained unsatisfied.
According to the victim, the demands for dowry grew over time. It is alleged that the in-laws began pressuring her for Rs 30 lakh. The woman states that she was subjected to persistent harassment because these demands were not met.
The complaint notes that the dispute over dowry was not limited to financial demands alone; it allegedly escalated into physical and mental abuse.
The judge’s husband is an engineer in the Merchant Navy
In this case, the judge’s husband is reported to be employed as an engineer in the Merchant Navy. It is alleged that the husband, along with other members of his family, pressured the woman to meet demands for dowry.
In her complaint, the woman—who is a judge—alleges that she continued to be harassed for dowry even after the marriage. Despite her efforts to maintain peace within the family, the alleged mistreatment did not cease.
However, the perspective of the accused husband and his family members has not yet emerged. The veracity of these allegations will only become clear following a police investigation.
Allegations of physical assault and mental harassment over dowry
The woman judge has leveled serious allegations against her husband and in-laws, claiming that they physically assaulted her and subjected her to mental harassment when their demands for dowry were not met.
According to the complaint, the couple’s marital life became strained due to the family’s ever-increasing demands. The woman alleges that she was pressured to provide dowry and was mistreated whenever she resisted.
Following these allegations, the police will now investigate when and under what circumstances the alleged incidents took place. Additionally, other facts mentioned in the complaint and any available evidence will be examined.
Allegations of threats to force a divorce and arrange a remarriage
In her complaint, the woman judge further alleges that her in-laws have threatened to force a divorce. According to the victim, they have stated that if their demands are not met, they will ensure her husband divorces her and marries someone else.
The woman claims that such threats have caused her significant mental distress. She states that the demands for dowry, coupled with threats to dissolve the marriage, have compounded her suffering.
A particularly significant aspect of this case is that the complainant herself serves in the judiciary; yet, she alleges that she has been subjected to harassment within her own marriage.
Police register FIR; investigation underway
Acting on the woman judge’s complaint, the police have registered an FIR against her husband—who is an engineer in the Merchant Navy—and his family members. The police are now investigating the allegations made in the complaint. During the investigation, evidence pertaining to items given at the time of marriage, alleged financial demands, physical assault, and threats may be examined. Furthermore, statements from both parties could prove significant in clarifying the actual circumstances of the case.
As of now, there is no confirmation regarding the arrest of the accused or any other legal action. The situation will become clearer only after the police investigation is concluded.
Strict Legal Provisions Against Dowry Harassment
In India, both the giving and receiving of dowry are prohibited under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Additionally, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provides for legal action in cases where a married woman is subjected to cruelty by her husband or his relatives.
Allegations of mental or physical harassment related to dowry demands are serious legal matters. However, in any case, such allegations can only be substantiated based on evidence and through the judicial process.
