Delhi The government is considering bringing a green budget in the capital.

The Delhi government is considering the possibility of introducing a Green Budget as part of its efforts to combat climate change, rising pollution, and rapid urbanization, while also ensuring that development in the national capital remains environmentally sustainable.

According to government sources, the proposed Green Budget aims to incorporate environmental priorities into the city’s financial planning so that development and ecological security can progress together.

Explaining the larger vision behind this initiative, sources said, “The Green Budget will create new job opportunities and help promote the adoption of clean technology.”

Officials said the primary objective of such a budget framework would be to ensure that a significant portion of government expenditure and development programs are spent on environmental priorities such as pollution control, clean energy, water conservation, biodiversity conservation, and other sustainable development initiatives.

This framework will also help track how much investment is being made in environmentally focused programs and assess the results of those investments.

Globally, many countries and some Indian states have already moved towards green or climate budgeting. These models allow governments to identify and classify environmentally relevant schemes in their budgets, improving transparency and enabling more efficient use of public funds.

The Delhi government is currently studying such a framework to explore how a similar model could be adopted for the capital.

Officials stated that the concept of a green budget goes beyond environmental protection and can also support economic growth by encouraging investment in sectors such as clean energy, green mobility, waste management, water conservation, and green infrastructure. Increased spending in these areas can boost technological innovation and create new employment opportunities.

Delhi has already implemented several measures in recent years to combat pollution and strengthen environmental protection. The government is promoting clean transportation through its electric vehicle (EV) policy to reduce vehicle emissions. Efforts are also underway to increase solar energy capacity, promote rooftop solar installations, increase green cover, strengthen waste management systems, and promote water conservation efforts.

Sources further stated that the government is consulting with experts, environmentalists, policymakers, and various departments to determine how the Green Budget concept can be effectively implemented. The aim is to ensure that future development projects in the capital are environmentally responsible and support long-term sustainability.

Officials believe that if implemented effectively, the Green Budget could be a crucial step towards making Delhi a cleaner and more sustainable city, and could also position the capital as a model for green growth and responsible urban development.
