DelhiDelhi: A court on Monday sentenced social activist Medha Patekar to five months in jail in a 23-year-old criminal defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.The court also ordered Madha Patekar to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to VK Saxena.A moot court in Delhi stayed the arrest of Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkal for 30 days to give her a chance to challenge the verdict. Azad- “Social justice will be achieved only when there is a caste-based census” Social activist and Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patekar has been found guilty by a Delhi court in a defamation case against Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena. Patekar rose to prominence in 1985 with Narmada Bachao Andhra (NBA), which focused on the problems of tribals, workers, farmers, fishermen, their families and other residents around the Narmada valley. At that time VK Saxena was the president of the Ahmedabad-based National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights. After Mr Patekar filed the suit, Mr Saxena also filed two suits against her for making defamatory statements on a television channel and making defamatory press statements.
