Myanmar: At least 226 people were killed and 77 missing when Typhoon Yagi hit Myanmar last week and triggered floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains, state media reported on Tuesday. The death toll recorded by the Myanmar government is nearly seven times higher than the initial count of 33 on Friday and is likely to rise. Myanmar is mired in civil war and the death toll remains steady, in part because of difficulties in communicating with affected areas.
Typhoon Yagi initially struck Vietnam, northern Thailand and Laos, killing about 300 people in Vietnam, 42 in Thailand and four in Laos, according to the ASEAN Centre for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
