Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, while addressing the Assembly on Friday, informed that eight FIRs have been registered in connection with the recent Churachandpur arson incident, out of which two cases are under investigation due to suspicion of involvement of terrorists. Have been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Responding to the calling attention motion moved by Congress MLA Keesham Meghchandra Singh on the Churachandpur incident, CM Biren Singh said that the Manipur government is making every possible effort to prevent such incidents from happening again. To properly investigate the matter, the government has taken strict action against the accused. So far, 20 people involved in arson and sabotage have been identified.
During Question Hour, CM Biren Singh, while replying to MLA Ranjit’s question regarding injuries and deaths of the state force during the violence, said that nine policemen lost their lives and 98 were injured. Three central security forces personnel also lost their lives in this violence, while 68 soldiers were injured. Ex-gratia has been given to the families of eight policemen and compensation has been given to the injured. At the same time, the process of giving ex-gratia amount in one case is still pending.
Citing a newspaper report in which PWD Minister Govind Das Konthoujam had accused MLA Paoline Lal Haokip of being involved in the violence. Congress MLA K. Meghchandra questioned the subsequent actions taken against Paulian Lal Haokip. CM Biren Singh mentioned in this regard that MLA Paolinlal Haokip had incited anger among the people of Churachandpur through ‘X’ regarding the suspension of the head constable before the mob started the attack. He said that when the mob started attacking, the security forces present at the spot warned them and resorted to lathicharge and tear gas shells to disperse them, but some protesters started firing on the security forces. After which the situation worsened. In this incident, a Central Force soldier was shot, but he survived because of his bulletproof jacket.
