Mangaluru (Karnataka): The Dakshina Kannada district administration has started working ahead of the monsoon season (June to August) by starting preparations to deal with various rain-related issues.
At a meeting held on Tuesday, district officials, deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP, approached the grassroots bureaucracy with instructions to deal with the challenges during the monsoon season.
Addressing officials of the Drinking Water and Disaster Management Authority, he highlighted the problems faced due to poor maintenance of the power system under the Mangaluru Electric Supply Company (MESCOM) and said it was not only the failure of power supply during rains, But there was also breakage of live cables. Falling of electric poles is a matter of concern.
Since this would cause serious damage to life and property, he urged MESCOM to exercise caution by conducting an inspection.
Muhilan also directed Mescom to deploy additional personnel and open more control rooms across the district during the monsoon season and said equal importance should be given to both urban and rural areas.
Muhilan said that ahead of the monsoon, existing domestic water availability should be managed judiciously.
In the meeting, emphasis was laid on cleaning dumping yards and garbage disposal areas before monsoon.
The health department was asked to take precautionary measures against the spread of infectious diseases like dengue and malaria during the rainy season.
He said that the National Highway should list the areas where landslides occur in the Charmadi ghat areas and information should be provided to the people about the traffic issues in the ghat areas.
The District Deputy Commissioner directed the Fisheries Department to organize a meeting on precautionary measures for fishermen during the rainy season.
