Cyclone Titwa: Red alert for 4 districts today

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday (November 29) as Cyclone ‘Tidwa’ is moving towards the northern Tamil Nadu coast near Sri Lanka.

A press release issued by the Chennai Meteorological Department on Friday regarding this: Cyclone ‘Tidwa’, which is over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lankan coast, is about 40 km southwest of Sri Lankan coast. It is 100 km northwest of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. It is 530 km south of Chennai.

It is likely to move northwestwards and cross the Sri Lankan coast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, and then move northwards and cross the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of November 30.

From December 1 to 4… Due to this, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at most places in North Tamil Nadu on Saturday (November 29) and Sunday (November 30), at a few places in South Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal areas and at one or two places in Tamil Nadu from December 1 to 4.

A red alert has been issued for heavy rain in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday (November 29). Additionally, strong winds with a speed of up to 90 kmph are likely to occur in the delta and adjoining coastal districts, Puducherry and Karaikal areas, and with a speed of up to 75 kmph in other coastal districts.

Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Trichy, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts and Karaikal areas, and heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Karur districts.

In Tiruvallur, Ranipet… On Sunday (November 30), heavy to very heavy rain is expected at a few places in Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts, with very heavy rain at one or two places. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected at one or two places in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Chengalpattu, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri districts, and heavy rain at one or two places in Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram districts, and Puducherry. On December 1, heavy rain is expected at one or two places in Tiruvallur district.

Chennai and Puducherry will experience generally cloudy skies on Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rain with thunder and lightning is expected in some parts of the city.

Warning to fishermen: Gale-force winds with speeds up to 80 kmph are expected in coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu, so fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas for fishing.

According to the rainfall in Tamil Nadu in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Friday, Ramanathapuram recorded the highest rainfall at 30 mm, followed by Thangachimadam and Pamban in Ramanathapuram district at 20 mm each, and Mandapam, Rameswaram and Tirthandathanam at 10 mm each. Rainfall has been reported.
