Congress to stage protest over ‘poor’ law and order situation in Punjab

Punjab: The Congress party will hold a protest in Chandigarh on Friday against the AAP government over the “deteriorating” law and order situation, the day the Punjab Assembly’s budget session is scheduled to begin. State Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja, all party MLAs, and other leaders joined the protest outside the Punjab Congress Bhawan. Questioning the law and order situation, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Pratap Bajwa, condemned the Gurdaspur incident in which a jeweler’s family was held hostage and robbed by armed robbers. He said the incident once again exposed the dangerous “deterioration” of law and order under the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Bajwa said such brazen crime reflects the dire ground reality in Punjab, where criminals “appear fearless” while ordinary people are forced to live in constant fear for their safety. He further said the incident has shaken the local community and raised serious questions about the state government’s ability to maintain basic law and order. Bajwa said, “The people of Punjab are witnessing a complete breakdown in policing. Law and order cannot be managed through ads, publicity campaigns, and empty promises. The government must understand that the safety of citizens is its foremost responsibility.” He added that the most disturbing aspect of the incident was that the robbery allegedly occurred barely 200 meters from the home of a Senior Superintendent of Police. Bajwa said, “If such a massive robbery can occur so close to the SSP’s home, and that too in broad daylight, it raises a very serious question—how safe are ordinary citizens in the rest of the state?” The Congress leader said that Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio, could shirk responsibility for the deteriorating law and order situation.
