NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday apologized for their distasteful jibe aimed at PM Modi over his meeting with Pope Francis in Italy. The cutting remark came from the Kerala unit of the congress over PM Modi’s meeting with the Pope.
“Finally, the pope got a chance to meet God.” This post from Congress caught the ire of many while some others termed it ‘deplorable’. Even union minister George Kurian came with a post accusing the Congress of ‘stooping so low’ in their standards and making disparaging statements against Christianity.
BJP state president K Surendran said that the Congress has now adopted a stance of mocking the Pope and the Christian community. Later, the Congress Kerala unit deleted the post and apologized.“The entire people of this country know that it is not the tradition of the Indian National Congress to insult or disparage any religion, religious priests and idols.Kerala Congress X page:However, the Congress has no qualms about mocking Narendra Modi, who insults the believers of this country by acting as a demigod figure. The people are well aware of the communal mind of Surendran and Modi’s entourage to portray the jibe hurled at Modi as an insult to the Pope. Surendran and his colleagues are trying to downgrade Christians as a group of people who have no self-respect. If their Christian love is genuine, then Modi and his cohorts who remained silent when Churches were torched in Manipur should first unconditionally apologize to the Christian community. If you act wisely and speak with humour, and you can put a smile on someone’s face, you can even make God laugh and think.” -Pope Francis, Friday, June 14, 2024 (said on the same day Narendra Modi visited the Pope)
