Chandigarh. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday visited Gujran village in Sangrur district and met the families of people who died due to suspected alcohol consumption. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday alleged that the tragedy was the result of a “liquor scam” running under the patronage of the AAP government in the state.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also demanded the resignation of Excise Minister Harpal Singh Cheema over the incident. Cheema also visited Sangrur on Sunday to meet the families of the victims. “We stand with these families. Whatever assistance they require, we will provide,” he said. The minister said those involved in the incident will be given strict punishment. A four-member special investigation led by Additional Director General of Police Gurinder Singh Dhillon was formed on Saturday to probe the incident. Team (SIT) was formed. Addressing the media in Chandigarh on Saturday, Dhillon said that the police have registered sections 61-A of the Excise Act in all the three FIRs registered at Dirba, City Sunam and Cheema police stations in connection with the case. The ADGP said on Saturday that Alcohol containing methanol was used to make fake liquor. Officials said that eleven people are being treated at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala and six at Civil Hospital in Sangrur after being suspected of drinking poisonous liquor. They said that 20 casualties were reported from Gujran, Tibbi Ravidas Pura and Dhandoli Khurd villages of Dirba and Sunam blocks of Sangrur district.
