World World: China’s ambassador to Australia has criticized the government’s intention to return the Darwin port to local ownership. He says that this port, which is strategically important and operated by the Chinese company Landbridge, should not be punished.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said during the election campaign in April that his government wants to sell this port from its Chinese owner on the basis of national interest. In 2015, Australia leased this port to the Chinese company Landbridge for 99 years.
The Australian government says that this port is an important asset not only for regional economic success but also of national importance. PM Albanese said that if a private buyer is not found, then his government can consider buying this port directly.
