Chennai: Woman killed after being hit near Superintendent of Police office

Chennai: A 46-year-old woman, who was returning home on a two-wheeler after dropping her child to school, died in an accident near the Chennai city police commissioner’s office on Wednesday morning. She was wearing a helmet but it came off after the van hit her as it was not properly fastened, officials said. The deceased woman, identified as D. Sridevi, a resident of Pudupet, was travelling on her two-wheeler on EVR Periyar Salai (Poonamallee High Road) around 9 a.m. when the incident occurred. Speaking to the media, the woman’s family members alleged that the traffic police had suddenly stopped her scooty when the loaded van hit her. However, CCTV footage showed that no traffic cop was present; the van hit the scooty while trying to overtake it. The van driver fled from the spot instead of helping her. Anna Square Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) personnel recovered his body and sent it to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) for postmortem. Now, the search is on to identify the driver of the van that hit him. “Though he was wearing a helmet, he had not fastened it properly and the helmet came off soon after the van hit him,” a police official said. In another accident near Thoraipakkam on the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, a 45-year-old man was killed when his bike was hit by a speeding tipper lorry. The deceased has been identified as Jaffer Sadiq (45). Jaffer, a native of Karur district, lived with his wife and three children in Thoraipakkam and worked in a private firm. The motorist died on the spot, police said. Guindy TIW personnel shifted Jaffer’s body to the government hospital for post-mortem and arrested the lorry driver, Omkar (30), a native of Uttar Pradesh.
