Chennai: Residents across the city are facing no respite from the overflowing and stagnant sewage in residential areas. The monsoon rains have worsened the situation, creating a major inconvenience. Residents and traders of Abdul Razak Road in West Tambaram have expressed concern over the accumulation of sewage near a public toilet complex that has remained unattended for nearly two months. Abdul Razak Road is one of Tambaram’s busiest roads, home to a police station, a municipal marriage hall, a school, police quarters, a mosque, and a market with over 500 shops. Thousands of people, including students, use the road daily. Locals reported that sewage from the municipal toilets overflows onto the road, causing a foul smell and a mosquito menace.
Tambaram resident Ramanathan said, “We have no choice but to cover our noses while passing by. Children and policemen living nearby are also severely affected.” Shopkeepers reported that due to sanitation concerns, customers are avoiding the area, resulting in a decline in their business. One vendor said, “People prefer to shop elsewhere, which is affecting their livelihoods.” Residents said that despite repeated complaints, no action has been taken yet. They have urged the Tambaram Corporation to immediately clean the stagnant sewage water and restore sanitation. When contacted, a Tambaram Corporation official said, “A few days ago, we cleaned the sewage and found a broken pipeline, and it has been repaired. We will reconsider the issue and take appropriate steps to clean the sewage soon.”
