Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Suburban Railway Service completed its 95th anniversary this year. A press release issued by the Chennai Railway Division on this occasion detailed the service’s historical development and expansion. This service is considered the backbone of the city’s transportation system and remains a vital part of the daily lives of millions of commuters.
According to the press release, Chennai’s suburban rail transport journey began in 1931. At that time, a light electric train service of approximately 29 kilometers was introduced between Coast (Chennai Beach) and Tambaram. This initiative earned Chennai the distinction of becoming the first city in South India to introduce electric suburban train service.
Initially, the service was limited in scope. Only a few trains operated, and fares were very low, fixed in the “anna” denomination. Despite limited resources, the service proved extremely useful to the common people. Due to its affordable and reliable transportation, the service quickly gained popularity, especially among middle-class travelers.
Over time, the Chennai suburban rail network was continuously expanded. In 1985, the electric train service was extended to Gummidipoondi, further strengthening the connectivity of Chennai’s northern suburbs. It was subsequently extended to Arakkonam in the same year. Later, the rail service was extended southward to Chengalpattu. With all these expansions, Chennai’s suburban rail network has evolved into a large and comprehensive system, connecting the city’s northern, western, and southern suburbs.
This rail network has played a vital role in Chennai’s urban development. Millions of passengers use the service daily, including office workers, students, and other daily commuters. Due to its low fares, regular service, and extensive network, the system is known as the city’s lifeline.
The Chennai Railway Division said in a statement that the suburban rail service not only provided convenience to passengers but also accelerated the development of the city’s surrounding areas. This has led to better connectivity of remote suburban areas with the city, and has led to the expansion of residential and commercial activities.
On this historic occasion of completing 95 years, railway officials have described this journey as a significant achievement and have pledged to work towards further modernization and expansion of the network in the future.
