Chennai: Pedestrians are facing difficulties crossing the Third Avenue Road at the Fifth Main Road junction in Anna Nagar, as stone blocks have been placed on the zebra crossing designated to prevent two-wheeler riders. Hundreds of people use this route daily, and this obstruction has created unsafe conditions for pedestrians. All the main roads in Anna Nagar are heavily trafficked throughout the day. Crossing the road is already risky, and placing stones on the zebra crossing has further increased the danger. Several pedestrians have reportedly slipped and fallen while trying to cross, and the danger is exacerbated in the evening when visibility is poor. Cyclists have also been hit by stones, losing their balance, and falling onto the carriageway.
School children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities are the most affected, as the uneven ground at the crossing has become difficult to walk on. Muthu, an elderly resident, said that this problem has persisted for almost a year without any solution. He said, “I slipped once and suffered minor injuries. This is especially difficult for senior citizens, school students, and pregnant women. Since hundreds of pedestrians use this route every day, the authorities should take necessary action.” Responding to the matter, a civic body official said that the corporation had not placed any stones at the pedestrian crossing and the obstruction was not part of any authorized work. The official said, “Now that we have received information that the public is being affected, officials will be sent to inspect the site. An investigation will be conducted to find out who placed the stones and for what purpose. If the stones were placed without authorization, they will be removed immediately.”
