Chennai: Three women filling water from a roadside public tap were crushed by a speeding car in Thoothukudi on Sunday. Another woman injured in the accident was rushed to a hospital where she is battling for life. According to a report in Daily Thanthi, the women were filling water from a public tap in Mukkani area when the car of Manikandan, son of Dharmarajan of Perungulam in Thoothukudi, crushed Santhi, Amaravathi and Parvathy.
The victims died on the spot while another woman Shanmugathai was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital. The report said Manikandan and his friends were coming from Bengaluru to Nalumavadi and said the car was moving at a high speed when it hit the women. The police arrested Manikandan. The gruesome accident enraged the family of the deceased and the people and they blocked the road in protest. Expressing grief over the death of the women in the accident, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the families of the three deceased women and Rs 1 lakh to the injured woman. Stalin also directed the authorities of Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital to ensure that she is provided with all the necessary treatment.
