Chennai, June 24:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic ammonia gas leak incident in Tiruvallur, which claimed several lives. Based on media reports, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
In its notice, the Commission has directed state officials to provide comprehensive information regarding the incident, including the health status of the affected workers and details of the compensation provided to the families of the deceased. The NHRC stated that the incident raises serious concerns regarding human rights violations.
According to current reports, nine people have died so far due to the ammonia leak at the seafood processing unit. It is reported that the incident occurred while workers—including women—were resting in an adjacent room and were exposed to the toxic gas leaking from the factory premises. Sudden exposure to the gas caused severe health complications for many of the workers.
More than 70 workers affected by the leak were taken to various hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur for treatment. Many required immediate medical attention due to the hazardous effects of ammonia exposure.
Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered a detailed inquiry and constituted a three-member committee to ascertain the cause of the gas leak. The committee is expected to examine safety protocols, working conditions, and potential lapses at the unit.
The NHRC has stated that it will review the report submitted by the state government before deciding on further action. This incident has once again raised concerns regarding industrial safety and the protection of workers’ rights in hazardous workplaces.
