Tamil Nadu: Doctors at Chennai’s Egmore Government Children’s Hospital successfully saved the life of a newborn baby after he suffered severe burns by successfully treating him with advanced medical techniques. This case is being considered a significant example of the medical system’s quick response and expert treatment capabilities.
According to reports, Anand Babu, a resident of Perambur, Chennai, and his wife, Dhanalakshmi, recently gave birth to a baby at the Corporation Maternity Hospital on Cariappa Street in Purasivakkam. After birth, the baby was placed in a warmer to maintain his body temperature. A leak in the electrical system caused a sudden fire, resulting in severe burns.
Immediately after the incident, the baby was given first aid and, given his critical condition, was referred to the Egmore Government Children’s Hospital. According to doctors, approximately 23 percent of the baby’s body had been burned. Upon admission to the hospital, the baby was in critical condition, with a low body temperature and an irregular heartbeat.
Doctors immediately initiated emergency treatment. Surgery was performed on the burned areas, and artificial skin grafting (collagen treatment) was performed to repair the skin. Due to the critical condition, the child was placed on a ventilator and given artificial respiration for four days.
During treatment, an infection was also detected, prompting doctors to administer a 14-day course of antibiotics. Furthermore, to maintain nutrition, the child was administered breast milk using a special technique from the third day, speeding his recovery.
After 24 days of intensive treatment, the child’s condition gradually improved, and he was eventually discharged from the hospital after recovering completely.
Senior doctors at Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital stated that this was a very challenging case, but the coordinated efforts of the team and modern medical techniques saved the child’s life. They stated that timely referral and advanced treatment were the key factors in this success.
Doctors also stated that this incident highlights the need for regular inspections of security and electrical systems in hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future.
This case not only demonstrates the success of the medical field but also highlights the crucial role of modern treatment methods in saving the lives of newborns.
