Chennai: Doctor’s allegation of staff demanding bribe to process transfer documents goes viral

Chennai: Hours after urologist Dr Jason Philip accused government Royapettah Hospital staff of demanding bribe to process his transfer documents, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian on Sunday intervened and assured the doctor that the matter would be resolved strictly as per official rules. In a social media post on Saturday, Dr Philip said that after his transfer on March 14, 2025, his service register (SR) has not been forwarded to his new posting at Madras Medical College (MMC). According to his complaint, a clerk and an office superintendent of the Royapettah hospital allegedly demanded Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively to release the file. Tagging the official Twitter handle of the health minister, Dr Philip wrote, “Clerk Malarvizhi is demanding a bribe of Rs 1,000 and the office superintendent sitting next to her is demanding Rs 2,000 to send my Specialist (SR) to a new station. The superintendent even told me, ‘You can even complain to the Chief Minister, but I will not send the Specialist (SR) without bribe.’ The doctor further alleged that such incidents are not isolated. She claimed, “During my tenure of nearly three decades, corrupt clerks of the state health department have constantly harassed me for bribes. Right from my first posting in the 1990s till now, in every transfer, money has been demanded to send my Specialist (SR) forward.” Ma Subramanian responded immediately and called Dr Philip personally. The doctor said in a social media post that the minister spoke to her sympathetically and assured her that all her legitimate grievances would be addressed.
