Chennai: Damaged manholes, mud on Kavarai Street pose danger to drivers

Chennai: A damaged and almost open manhole on Kavarai Street in West Mambalam has become a serious safety hazard for motorists and the general public, while there has been no intervention from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in the matter. Moreover, residents expressed concern over leakage from water pipelines and claimed that Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) officials have not paid any attention to the issue. The manhole cover at this location has been damaged for about a week and residents claim that no action has been taken yet despite complaints. Speaking to DT Next, a resident said, “The damaged manhole cover caught my attention a week ago.
However, I recently noticed a hole near the manhole from where water seeps in. Both the water leakage and the damaged manhole pose a danger to the public and motorists, especially children.” Another commuter urged the government officials to resolve the issue swiftly before any untoward incident takes place. “With rains likely to occur, it is time to repair the damaged manholes properly. Also, the concerned authorities should inspect the condition of other manholes,” the commuter urged. Speaking to DT Next, the councillor of ward 140 said, “Regarding the water pipeline leakage and damaged manholes, we will inform the Metro Water Department. Since the GCC has issued the tender and the approval process is underway, the roads will be reconstructed later.”
