Chandigarh: To address the parking problem in commercial areas, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to conduct a demand assessment study for construction of underground parking lots in Sectors 9 and 22. During the UT Administrator’s Advisory Council meeting held in August last year, a member had pointed out the serious parking problem in Sectors 8, 9, 22 and other sectors. The administration should consider provision of underground parking lots in congested sectors that have hotels, banks and shops. Such lots in Sectors 8 and 9 should have power lifts and air conditioning arrangements, he said.
In an action report to be submitted during the council meeting to be held tomorrow, the MC has said that a demand assessment study for construction of underground parking lots in Sectors 9 and 22 will be conducted in three months. “As of now, there are a total of nine underground parking facilities under the MC’s jurisdiction. Seven lots, two in Sector 8 and 5 in Sector 17, are in dilapidated condition and are lying closed. An underground parking in Sector 8 is under repair and will be operational soon,” the MC said. UT Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria will chair his first meeting of the council in which around 90 issues will be taken up, mostly related to the estate office, urban planning department, municipal corporation, police, education, health, social welfare, industrial, transport, sports, forest, culture, tourism, engineering, heritage, environment, traffic, etc.
The committee has around 60 members. A detailed action taken report (ATR) has been prepared and circulated to all members of the council. All departments have prepared their replies to the action taken report in the last meeting held on August 18, 2023. During the meeting, chairpersons of all 10 standing committees on education, urban infrastructure and planning for the city, environment, health, arts, etc will make recommendations on the action taken report.
