Chandigarh: A local court has sentenced Akhilesh Mahajan, a resident of Hoshiarpur, Punjab, to life imprisonment for killing his mother in Sector 11 four years ago. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict. A case was registered against the accused under sections 308 and 302 of the IPC at Sector 11 police station on January 21, 2020. The complainant, a businessman living in Sector 11, said that he heard crying from a house in front of his and came out to inquire about the matter. He told that he saw that Akhilesh, who was living as a tenant in the house, was beating his mother Sushma Gupta. The accused said that his mother has accused him of murder. The complainant said that Akhilesh was abusing his mother and kicked her in the face, due to which his mother started bleeding and one of her teeth broke. When he and others tried to stop Akhilesh, he threatened them. The police was called and the victim was taken to PGI for treatment, where she died. Initially, the police had registered a case under Section 308 of the IPC, but Section 302 was also added after the woman’s death. Abhishek’s lawyer argued that the accused has been falsely implicated in the case. On the other hand, the public prosecutor claimed that the prosecution has proved the case beyond a shadow of doubt. After hearing the arguments, the court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment, while rejecting his plea for leniency.
