Chandigarh: In a major blow to the cross-border drug smuggling racket during the ongoing campaign to make Punjab a drug-free state, the Punjab Police has arrested 6 persons with 8 kg heroin and three pistols and busted two other drug smuggling rackets backed by Pakistan. It may be noted that both these intelligence operations were carried out by the Amritsar Rural Police.
Giving more information about this, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said here today that this success has been achieved a day after the Amritsar Commissionerate Police busted two cross-border drug smuggling rackets being run by Pakistan-based smugglers and arrested three drug smugglers with 9.2 kg heroin (8.2 kg + 1 kg).
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that the police had received intelligence that two persons riding a Hero Splendor motorcycle were carrying a consignment of drugs, on which the police teams of Amritsar Rural surrounded them near a brick kiln in village Bachiwind.
He said that after arresting two drug smugglers named Gurbhej Singh and Jaskaran Singh, residents of village Manjh in Amritsar, the police teams recovered 6 kg heroin and three pistols, including one 9 mm Glock and two 32 bore pistols, from their possession and also confiscated the motorcycle of the accused.
In this regard, case number 134 dated 29/06/2024 has been registered in Police Station Lopoke, Amritsar under sections 21-C, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act and section 25 of the Arms Act.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that acting on another intelligence input, patrolling teams of Amritsar Rural Police arrested four persons including a father-son duo while dealing in a consignment of 2 kg heroin near village Noorpur falling under the jurisdiction of police station Lopoke.
The two persons who were going to deliver the consignment of drugs have been identified as Balbir Singh and his son Akashdeep Singh, both residents of Kohali, Amritsar, while the other two arrested persons, who had come to receive the consignment, have been identified as Philips and Jobanjit Singh, residents of village Moolchak, Amritsar.
Apart from recovering 2 kg heroin from the accused, the police teams have also seized drug money worth Rs 30,000 and their Activa scooter and a motorcycle from their possession.
In this regard, FIR No. 132 dated 28/06/2024 has been registered at Police Station Lopoke Amritsar under sections 21-C, 25, 27-A and 29 of NDPS Act.
The DGP said that further investigation is underway to find out the back-to-back links in both the cases.
Giving details in this regard, SSP Amritsar Rural Satinder Singh said that as per the preliminary investigation, all the accused arrested in both the cases were directly in contact with Pakistan based smugglers, who used to import drugs from Pakistan through drones and supply them across the state.
He said that further investigation is being carried out to expose the entire network of drug suppliers, dealers and their buyers. The SSP said that efforts are also being made to find out the total quantity of drugs purchased so far by the arrested accused.
