CG NEWS: Bihaan group’s sisters are moving forward towards turmeric cultivation

Apart from religious functions, turmeric has been used as a spice, colouring material, medicine and scrub. Along with medicinal and household use, anti-cancer properties are also found in turmeric. In this sequence, 5 villages of Kuakonda block of Dantewada district have been selected for the production of turmeric. Women of Bihan group are moving forward by cultivating turmeric.

It is a 5 to 6 feet growing plant of ginger species in which turmeric is found in the root nodes. Turmeric is considered an important medicine in Ayurveda. Apart from this, it has an important place in Indian kitchen. It is also considered very auspicious in Indian society from religious and cultural point of view. The ritual of turmeric has a special significance in marriage. Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission “Bihan”, the sisters of the local self-help group are moving forward towards farming for turmeric production. Horticulture department has provided 20 quintals of turmeric seeds to 50 interested women of village Renganar, Garhmiri, Kuakonda, Halbaras, Mailawara, Gogpal and the sisters of the group have planted 40 kg of turmeric bulbs in their garden. Thus, if turmeric is produced this year, then next year this turmeric will also be purchased by Maa Danteshwari Mahila Farmer Producer Company Limited Kuakonda. After purchasing, there is a plan to process this turmeric by the group and supply it to shops and wholesale grocery stores. There is a good environment for turmeric cultivation in the rural areas of the district. National Rural Livelihood Mission “Bihan” is taking initiatives to link turmeric cultivation with economic prosperity and livelihood of women. chhattisgarh
