Bharatiya Janata Party expressed displeasure over the announcement of ‘Constitution Murder Day’ by the Center

Kolkata: Hours after the Centre announced that June 25 will be observed every year as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to commemorate the Emergency declared in 1975 by the then Indira Gandhi government, leaders of the opposition Bharatiya Bloc hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that it has been “murdering” the Constitution every day for the past 10 years. “Since 2014, the BJP has murdered the Constitution every day,” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Priyanka Kakkar told ANI on Friday. Highlighting instances of the ruling BJP being on the “wrong side” of the Constitution, Kakkar said, “Recently, during the Chandigarh mayor election, Anil Massi murdered the Constitution on camera and free and fair elections were not being held. In Delhi, after a 9-year long battle, the Delhi government got the services under it, but the BJP brought a law and denied the Supreme Court order. This is the murder of the Constitution.” Continuing his attack, Kakkar said, “When the BJP came up with unconstitutional electoral bonds, the Constitution was murdered. Even the Supreme Court said it was an unconstitutional scheme. It was Constitutional fraud.” The AAP leader said the BJP would have abolished reservation in the country if it won more than 400 seats with its allies. “We survived. They were raising slogans of “400 Paar” but stopped at 240. Otherwise they would have abolished reservation,” he said. He also criticised the ruling BJP over the “misuse” of central probe agencies. “The BJP has continuously murdered the Constitution by misusing the CBI and ED,” Kakkar said. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh also echoed similar sentiments and said the Emergency incident was an “event of history” but the BJP was trying to play this “old card” for its own benefit. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Ghosh said, “She (Indira Gandhi) has been criticised, Indira Gandhi lost once and Indira Gandhi came back to power as Prime Minister. So that chapter was just a page in history and years later, it was again discussed.”
