Odisha: Ahead of the upcoming Danda Yatra festival, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) of the Berhampur Circle has directed all divisional forest officers to take strict action against the use of snakes and other wild animals during cultural performances.
The circular, issued on February 10, states that some drama committees use reptiles, especially snakes, in stage plays and social dramas held during the festival. The RCCF stated that such practices violate the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the BNS 2023.
Forest officers have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance and initiate legal action against violators. The directive also calls for conducting awareness campaigns in villages and informing organizers, and coordinating with district collectors and police officers to prevent the use of animals in performances.
The circular specifically states that violations of Sections 9, 43, 44, 48, and 49 of the Wildlife Protection Act will result in penalties under Sections 51, 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and Section 325 of the BNS 2023, as well as fines.
Officials emphasized that cultural traditions should not compromise wildlife protection or animal welfare. This move aims to ensure that the Danda Yatra celebrations remain vibrant while adhering to legal and ethical standards.
