Kuala Lumpur, December 1: In a thrilling final on Sunday, Belgium defeated India 1-0 in a close contest to win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
India had to settle for the silver medal thanks to Thibaut Stockbroeks’ only goal of the match in the 34th minute.
This is Belgium’s first Sultan Azlan Shah title and only their second in the event.
Unfortunately, India came into this match after a high-scoring 14-3 win against Canada on Saturday, but they failed to convert three penalty corners.
Although Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay have been successful in the PC attack during the tournament, they were unable to penetrate the Belgian defense.
This was India’s second defeat in the tournament after losing 2-3 to the European powerhouse in the league stage. The midfield was fiercely contested, and with experienced stars like Manpreet Singh and Hardik Singh rested for the tournament, the onus was on the young players, who performed well to secure a narrow victory. Both teams displayed tactical play, with Belgium starting the game better with superior ball possession. Their attacks troubled the Indian defense on both sides, forcing the Indian goalkeeper to make some sharp saves.
Stockbroek’s goal in the 34th minute put India under pressure. India tried hard to equalize the score in the final quarter, but Belgium’s structure remained strong and they ran out of time to secure the victory.
