Uttarakhand: A major step is being taken to make air services safer and more modern. New Air Traffic Control (ATC) towers will be established at key religious and tourist sites in the state—Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Sahastradhara. The initiative aims to make the operations of helicopter and other air services safer, more organized, and efficient.
Every year, a large number of pilgrims utilize helicopter services during the Char Dham Yatra. Given the rising air traffic, the need for a modern air traffic management system had long been felt. The new ATC towers will improve flight monitoring and help ensure safe operations, even during adverse weather conditions.
Major Benefit for Char Dham Yatra
Badrinath and Kedarnath are among the country’s most prominent pilgrimage sites. During the pilgrimage season, a large number of helicopter flights operate here daily. Flight operations are considered highly sensitive due to sudden weather changes and the challenging terrain of the mountainous region.
Once the ATC towers are operational, flight coordination will be more effective, leading to better air traffic management and a reduction in potential risks.
Sahastradhara Heliport to be Modernized
The Sahastradhara Heliport in Dehradun is a crucial hub for helicopter services in the state. Flights operate from here to various destinations, including the Char Dham sites.
The installation of the new ATC system will make flight monitoring, as well as takeoff and landing procedures, safer and more organized. This will benefit passengers, pilots, and operators alike.
Monitoring via Modern Technology
Modern communication and surveillance equipment will be installed in the proposed ATC towers. This will enable air traffic controllers to monitor flight status in real-time and issue necessary instructions.
The system will prove vital for monitoring changing weather conditions, visibility, and flight paths, particularly in mountainous areas.
Enhanced Safety
According to experts, air traffic in the Char Dham region is steadily increasing. In this context, a modern air traffic control system will help reduce the risk of accidents and facilitate quick decision-making during emergencies.
This will ensure better coordination between flights and significantly enhance passenger safety.
Boost to Tourism and Connectivity
The installation of ATC towers will not only make the Char Dham Yatra safer but also boost religious tourism and regional air connectivity in Uttarakhand. Improved aviation infrastructure is expected to strengthen the state’s tourism industry.
The state government and relevant agencies aim to provide a safe, seamless, and reliable travel experience to passengers through modern aviation facilities.
