Assembly elections: Airfares increase manifold

Tamil Nadu: Due to the Assembly elections, many people are flying to their hometowns, causing fares to increase manifold.
Due to the Assembly elections scheduled for Thursday, many residents of Chennai’s Managar and Poogar areas flew to their hometowns on Wednesday to cast their votes. This resulted in an unusually large rush of passengers at the airport. Most flights for Wednesday and Thursday are sold out. Tickets are available only on a few flights. Taking advantage of this, airlines have increased their fares several times.
Accordingly, the Chennai-Thoothukudi fare, which was ₹5,354 on normal days, has now been increased to ₹17,527. For Chennai-Madurai, it has been increased from ₹6,670 to ₹13,320; for Chennai-Trichy, it has been increased from ₹3,677 to ₹14,237; for Chennai-Coimbatore, it has been increased from ₹4,634 to ₹16,339; and for Chennai-Salem, it has been increased from ₹3,319 to ₹12,027.
Accordingly, ticket prices for many flights have been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000, causing significant inconvenience to travelers. Many Tamils living abroad have pre-registered their tickets to vote in the elections. Tamils from other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, have come to Tamil Nadu. Similarly, a large number of Tamils living in countries like London, Scotland, the United States, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand have also come to Tamil Nadu to vote in the elections. Many of them said they were voting for the first time. Chennai airport officials said this has led to a significant increase in the number of passengers arriving from abroad at Chennai International Airport in the past few days.
