Guwahati: Making a fresh appeal for regional unity, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) will hold tribute events across the state on December 12th to honor the martyrs of the anti-CAA movement. The main tribute event will be held at Hatigaon High School in Guwahati, where senior AASU leaders will lay flowers.
AASU declared December 11th a “black day against the CAA.”
AASU President Utpal Sarma, confirming tomorrow’s event, said, “The sacrifices of the CAA martyrs remind us that Assam’s identity and dignity cannot be compromised at any cost.”
He stressed that the organization will continue its democratic protest because “the CAA is unacceptable to the people of Assam and the entire Northeast.”
General Secretary Samiran Phukon said, “This is not just a memorial. It is a reminder that Assam’s rights and future cannot be compromised. The movement will continue in this spirit.”
District, Zonal, and Regional Units Gather
According to an official AASU circular, all district committees, regional bodies, and affiliated student units have been directed to hold a simultaneous tribute ceremony at 11 a.m. across Assam.
The circular states that this tribute is dedicated to Sam Stafford, Dipanjal Das, Ishwar Nayak, Abdul Alim, and all those who lost their lives during the 2019 anti-CAA protests.
AASU has appealed to all units to observe the event with discipline, dignity, and full black-flag protocol, and to observe the day as a united protest.
“CAA is still a threat”—AASU hardens its stance
Allaying concerns over the Center’s continued push for CAA rules, Utpal Sarma warned,
“Neither Assam nor the Northeast can accept laws that threaten our cultural and linguistic existence. CAA is not just a law; it is injustice to the indigenous people.”
He further stated that granting citizenship to outsiders based on religion will put immense pressure on the state’s land, language, and social fabric.
Central Committee strategy meeting held
Sources confirmed that the AASU’s Central Executive met today under the “Focused on Tomorrow” program, reviewing political developments and preparing for a strong mobilization across the state.
An insider told this reporter, “If the Center notifies the CAA rules, the movement will intensify. Assam will witness a new phase of democratic protest.”
“CAA Ami Namnu”—Mass Call Renewed
Along with the circular, AASU and youth volunteers distributed digital posters declaring December 11th a “Black Day,” urging people to raise black flags as a symbol of continued protest.
The poster reads:
“CAA Ami Namnu.”
“Assam, the Northeast will continue to protest this injustice.”
