Assam Rifles celebrates 188th Raising Day

Guwahati (IANS) | The Assam Rifles, the country’s oldest and most decorated paramilitary force, celebrated its 188th Raising Day on Friday at the Latkor Garrison in Shillong and its various formations and units in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir. Raised on March 24, 1835, the force has served the nation and contributed significantly in bringing peace in the northeastern states, the official statement said.

This year the Raising Day celebrations were attended by Union Tourism and Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy, along with Lt Gen PC Nair, DG Assam Rifles, and all ranks of the force paying homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice over the past 188 years Is.

Reddy addressed all ranks of the force at the special soldiers’ conference, in which he commended them for their outstanding contribution in fighting insurgency in the Northeast and Kashmir. The force continues to prove its mettle in operations in 2022-23. During this period, three battalions received the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation and five battalions received the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation.

In addition, personnel of the force were awarded one Shaurya Chakra, seven Sena Medals, 411 President’s and Governor’s Medals, an official statement said. The force has also excelled in sports by winning several medals at national and international level in the last one year.

The official statement further said, with each passing year, the Assam Rifles stands firmer among the people of the Northeast. As the region marches towards development and prosperity, the force is further enhancing the sense of security among the local population.
