FIA appeals to Civil Aviation Minister for early credit support to airlines.

New Delhi. Amidst the growing financial and operational challenges facing the Indian aviation industry, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) has sought immediate financial assistance from the Central Government. FIA, representing major airlines like Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, has written to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, urging him to release credit support to eligible member airlines under the ‘Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0 as soon as possible. FIA has said in its letter that the Indian aviation sector is facing continuous pressure from April 2026. The ongoing conflict in West Asia, restrictions on airspace, flight diversions, depreciation of the rupee and rising operating costs have impacted the financial condition of airlines. Apart from this, the huge increase in the prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel i.e. ATF has also increased the expenses of the airlines.
Impact on liquidity of airlines
According to FIA, all these circumstances have had a direct impact on the liquidity and working capital of the airlines. Airlines need adequate cash to meet everyday operating expenses, fuel costs and other essential payments. In such a situation, the ever-increasing expenses and operational constraints have increased the financial needs of the companies. FIA has told the government that in view of the current circumstances, it is necessary to quickly release the credit support available under ECLGS 5.0 to the eligible airlines. The organization says that timely financial assistance can help airlines deal with the current pressure and keep their operations stable.
Challenge increased due to West Asia conflict
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has also affected international aviation operations. Due to airspace restrictions and security conditions, the routes of many flights have to be changed. Adopting longer or alternative routes may increase the cost of flight operations. Increase in fuel consumption, flight time and other operating expenses impact the cost structure of airlines. FIA has described these circumstances as part of the unprecedented financial and operational challenges facing the Indian aviation sector. According to the organization, increasing pressure on multiple fronts simultaneously has made it difficult for airlines to meet their financial needs.
The exchange rate of the rupee also affects the expenses of airlines. Many types of expenses in the aviation industry are related to foreign exchange. In such a situation, the fall in the value of rupee may increase the financial pressure on the companies. Along with this, the increase in ATF prices is one of the most important cost related challenges for the airlines. Fuel plays a big role in aircraft operation. Increase in fuel prices has a direct impact on the total operating costs of airlines. In the current circumstances when flight routes are also changing due to airspace constraints, the pressure on fuel and operating costs becomes more significant.
Demand for immediate intervention from the government
FIA has sought immediate intervention of the Civil Aviation Minister in the matter. The organization wants to expedite the process of releasing credit support to eligible member airlines under ECLGS 5.0. FIA believes that by getting financial assistance at this time, airlines will be able to better handle their liquidity and working capital needs. FIA said that the current situation has had a serious impact on the liquidity and working capital of airlines and hence there is a need for immediate help from the government. The demand for the organization comes at a time when the Indian aviation sector is facing several cost and operational challenges both domestically and internationally.
Hope of relief for aviation sector
Maintaining financial stability is also important for airlines because the aviation sector impacts passengers, airport services, tourism, cargo and other related businesses. In such a situation, credit facility available on time can play an important role in keeping the financial condition of the airlines stable. Now the aviation sector will keep an eye on what action is taken by the government on the demand of FIA. If eligible airlines get early credit support under ECLGS 5.0, it may provide relief to the companies to deal with the current financial pressure.
