Assam DGP told policemen, lose weight by November or take VRS

Guwahati (IANS) | Police personnel in Assam, who are overweight, have time till November this year to reduce their weight, else they will have to go for VRS. Assam’s DGP G.P. Singh said on Tuesday. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that an obese person cannot work in the state police department. Such police personnel will have to take VRS by following the government procedure.

Singh said, it has been decided to do professional recording of Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS and APS officers, battalions and other staff of the police department.

“We are planning to give three months’ time till August 15 to all Assam Police personnel including officers and then do BMI assessment in the next 15 days,” he said. Those who are in the obese (BMI 30+) category will be given three more months till November to lose weight.

Singh further said that officers and personnel who fail to reduce their weight, unless they have co-morbidities like hypothyroidism etc., will be given the option of VRS.

The DGP also mentioned that he himself would be the first person to go for a professional reading of BMI.
