Arunachal: Seminar held on the identity of the Northeast

DOIMUKH: A two-day national seminar on ‘Revisiting Tribal Histories: Culture, Memory and Identity in Northeast India’ was conducted at the Government College Doimukh (GCD), attracting prominent historians, researchers, and academicians from across the country.
The event was organised by the history department of the GCD, under the sponsorship of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi.
The seminar commenced with a vibrant inaugural ceremony, featuring a chorus performance by students of the history department.
GCD Principal Dr Taw Azu delivered the welcome address, followed by an introduction to the seminar’s core themes by coordinator Dr Chhomu.
The programme was attended by NES president Prof Tana Showren, who emphasised the importance of re-evaluating historical perspectives through tribal narratives, memories, and lived experiences.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof Amarjiva Lochan, vice president of IAHR under CIPSH-UNESCO. He spoke on the global significance of preserving tribal religious histories and cultural traditions.
Other speakers included former Gauhati University history department head Prof Paromita Das and DrDeepi Rekha Kouli, director of archaeology, Guwahati.
More than 60 research papers were presented by scholars from various universities and colleges across the country.
The seminar provided an important platform for scholarly discussions on tribal histories, cultural heritage, memory, identity, and contemporary challenges in Northeast India.
