YINGKIONG : An ‘interaction-cum-focused group discussion’ on the issue of polygamy and its impact on women’s mental health was conducted at the office of the Upper Siang district unit of the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion as the facilitator, Moti Pangkam, assistant professor at Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha, shared her academic interest in studying the issues surrounding polygamy, particularly its impact on women’s mental health. She also highlighted the significant role of the media in amplifying the voices of women and addressing social issues affecting them.
Addressing the gathering, APWWS Upper Siang president Kasimang Jopir Pazing said that the organisation has been actively conducting awareness campaigns on legal literacy, women’s rights, skill development, education, and anti-drug initiatives. She emphasised that creating awareness on polygamy-related issues is now one of the top priorities of the APWWS, and informed that it would soon organise dedicated awareness programmes on the issue.
DIPRO-cum-APWWS publicity in-charge Yalik Jerang emphasised the need for proper upbringing and empowerment of the girl child through quality education to make them financially independent, along with creating awareness on healthy societal norms.
She added that it is equally important to educate young and vulnerable girls about the consequences of polygamy. She further added that education, along with a positive mindset, is essential for bringing about meaningful and transformational social change.
