CHAYANG TAJO: Remote administrative headquarters Chayang Tajo in East Kameng district was reportedly ravaged by a flash flood on 4 June.
Chayang Tajo received incessant rains, causing massive flood and disruption of essential services, water supply line, and power lines in many areas. Surface communication was also snapped.
It is reported that there was a cloudburst over Chayang Tajo and its adjoining villages on 4 June, which triggered the flash flood.
The flood has left a trail of destruction, as several paddy fields and standing crops were also reportedly damaged in the villages. Sources in Chayang Tajo informed that the 150 mm diameter main pipeline from the water treatment plant in Chayang Tajo was washed away.
Officials in Chayang Tajo informed that restoration work is underway. However, they said, it would take not less than two weeks due to high altitude and tough terrain. It is also learnt that various rural water supply structures (especially headworks/intake tank), including live water supply pipelines in Soshi Bagang, Namchar Bagang, Doripu Bagang, Laching Bagang, Rebe, and Killo villages were totally damaged, forcing the villagers to rely on rainwater from the roofs or nearby streams.
The Chayang Tajo PHE&WS Division is reportedly mobilising all its staffers from other non-affected sections for restoration of water supply in the affected villages.
On surface communication, it is learnt that 40 percent of the PMGSY road from Domdila Tajo to Laching Bagang via Soshi, Namchar and Doripu Bagang were damaged or were swept away by the flash flood. The RCC bridge at Pao-Nallah, which connects all these villages, has been washed away. It is also learnt that in some stretches of the Damdila to Laching Bagang road, the formation cuttings were swept away, making it difficult for commuters to cross over.
The said road is a lifeline for these five villages. It is also learnt that the PMGSY road from Holling to Jayang Bagang via Killo and Rebe villages has also been blocked at various chainages. The flood also damaged the Seppa to Chayang Tajo NEC road at various locations near Chayang Tajo. However, the clearance of the blocked areas is underway and vehicle movement has been restored.
