Antonio Guterres Voices Concern Over Violence In Bangladesh Including Lynching Of Hindu Man

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over the violence taking place in Bangladesh. He was reacting to the incident of a Hindu man being beaten to death. The UN Secretary-General’s representative Stephane Dujarric said that the violent incidents taking place in Bangladesh are a matter of concern. He expressed this view at a press meet. He made these comments when asked to respond to the issue of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Dujarric said that he is confident that the government will take all measures to ensure that every citizen of the country is safe, whether it is Bangladesh or any other country, people who are not part of the majority should be safe, all Bangladeshis should be safe.
Many media organizations in Bangladesh are also expressing concern. Bangladeshi journalists have alleged that their right to life is being threatened by the targeting of media organizations. Journalists have stated that the Bangladeshi media is currently in a poor state and that freedom of expression has been curtailed. Several editors have expressed concern in the wake of the incident in which the offices of Protam Alo and The Daily Star newspapers in Dhaka were set on fire. Editors alleged that many journalists were trapped inside when the offices were set on fire, and that the police and fire services were prevented from entering. Freedom of expression is no longer an issue, but survival has become the issue, said Daily Star editor Mahfooz Anam.
