Islamabad: In Pakistan’s Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a mob angry over alleged desecration of Quran killed a person and eight people were injured in the violence that ensued. The angry mob shot the accused and burnt him. After this, they dragged the body out and hung the half-burnt body. Police gave this information. Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Zahidullah said that a person from Sialkot, Punjab had allegedly burnt some pages of Quran in Swat’s Madyan tehsil on Thursday night.
Zahidullah said that the suspect was taken into custody and brought to Madyan police station. A crowd gathered outside the police station and demanded that the suspect be handed over. When the police refused to do so, someone from the crowd opened fire, following which the police retaliated.
He said that in the firing from both sides, one person was seriously injured and was admitted to Madyan Hospital. The official said that the mob then set the police station on fire. Later some people entered the police station and shot the suspect. He said that after shooting, they dragged the body of the suspect to Madyan Adda and hanged it there.
The official said that eight people were injured in the violence that erupted due to the incident. He said that heavy police force has been deployed in Madyan and efforts are being made to bring the situation under control. Chief Minister KPK Ali Amin Gandapur has taken cognizance of the incident and sought a report from the provincial police chief. The Chief Minister directed to take emergency measures to control the situation and urged the people to remain calm.
