Hooghly: A person was beaten to death by a mob in Hooghly district of West Bengal on Monday. Police gave this information. This is the fourth incident of a person being beaten to death by a mob in the state. Earlier, similar incidents took place in Kolkata, Salt Lake and Jhargram on 28, 29 and 30 June. Police said that the deceased has been identified as Biswajit Manna, a resident of Naita Malpaharpur Gram Panchayat of Tarakeshwar area of Hooghly district.
A senior officer of Hooghly (Dehat) police station said that two people have been detained in connection with this crime. He said that the police has registered a case taking suo motu cognizance. Police said that preliminary investigation revealed that on Sunday night when Manna was sleeping at his home, the accused, known to the family, called him. Police said that Manna had taken a loan of about 50 thousand rupees from the accused, which he had failed to repay.
The police said, “The accused tied Manna in his friend’s house and beat him till he fell unconscious. Manna’s mother, along with her daughter-in-law, somehow rescued him and admitted him to a nearby hospital, but he died during treatment.”
