Amritsar: Two drug smugglers opened fire on police, a passerby died

Punjab: A Tarn Taran resident was killed in firing by two drug smugglers in Neshta village of the district on Wednesday night. Gurjeet Singh, 35, a resident of Rasulpur village in Tarn Taran, had come to visit relatives in the village. The Amritsar rural police was chasing the two smugglers, who were asked to flee from a police checkpost. Police seized 5 kg heroin from the spot, which the duo had dropped while fleeing.

Gharinda police station SHO Amandeep Singh said the police had received information about the movement of two drug smugglers on a motorcycle. They were headed towards Amritsar. Ad “Police asked the duo to stop. However, they tried to flee,” Amandeep said. He said the police asked them to surrender, but the duo threw away the bag full of drugs, took out pistols and opened fire at the police. However, the bullet hit passerby Gurjeet. Police rushed him to a hospital, where he died, he said. A case has been registered and raids are being conducted to arrest the duo.
