Punjab: Volunteers of Kar Seva Guru Ka Baag and the district administration engaged in filling a major breach in Ghonewal village are facing problems due to its extreme depth. This was the largest breach among the 20 breaches recorded in Ajnala subdivision. The breach was about 500 metres long and caused inundation of about 190 villages of Ramdas, Ajnala, Rajasansi and Lopoke. The work of filling the breach at Ghonewal in Ramdas began on September 3. So far, only half of the breach has been filled.
Initially, the pit formed by the breach was thought to be about 25-30 feet deep, but as the work progressed, it was found to be even deeper. Volunteers are now pumping out water. “All the material, including sacks filled with soil, sank without a trace. It appears that the breach is about 50 feet deep,” said volunteer Ajit Singh. Akali Dal leader Jodh Singh Samra said that the administration has contacted various Kar Seva groups to repair the broken roads. Help has also been sought from the army and other related departments.
