Punjab: A man arrested by Majitha Road police in a drug-related case died under mysterious circumstances. According to police, he was HIV positive as well as a hepatitis patient and died in hospital. However, the family of the deceased alleged that he was arrested in a false case and died in police custody. They raised slogans against Punjab Police and staged a sit-in protest outside Majitha Road police station in this regard. Senior police officials reached the spot and pacified the protesters. They said that appropriate action will be taken after the post-mortem report of the deceased is received.
Majitha police said that he was brought on police remand for questioning but his condition deteriorated in the evening as he was HIV positive and also suffering from hepatitis. He was immediately admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where he died. They said further investigation is underway. The family alleged that the deceased was neither a drug addict nor was he involved in drug trafficking. The police had filed a false FIR against him on August 20 and claimed to have recovered 20 grams of heroin. The police produced him in court, from where he was sent to police custody for further investigation. On Saturday night his condition started deteriorating and he was admitted to the hospital where it was found that he was suffering from hepatitis and HIV.
